Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Geopolitical boundaries play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of inter-religious harmony in many parts of Nigeria. In Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State, the intersection of diverse religious groups, including Muslims and Christians, has led to complex social relationships, often influenced by the geographical and political boundaries that separate these groups. The influence of political and ethnic divisions in the region has often resulted in tensions between different religious communities, as competing narratives surrounding religion and territory come to the fore (Aminu & Habib, 2024).

Tafawa Balewa is characterized by ethnic and religious diversity, and geopolitical boundaries are a significant factor in how different groups interact. These boundaries not only delineate political territories but also create spaces where religious identities are reinforced or contested. Political leaders and religious authorities often use these boundaries to either foster harmony or exacerbate division, with some exploiting religious tensions for political gain. The study seeks to explore how these geopolitical boundaries impact the peace-building process and religious relations in Tafawa Balewa, with a focus on the role of local leadership and government policies in promoting inter-religious harmony (Aliyu, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Geopolitical boundaries in Tafawa Balewa LGA often serve as a source of division, contributing to inter-religious conflicts rather than fostering harmony. The failure of political and religious leaders to manage these boundaries effectively can lead to tensions between different religious groups. This study will investigate how geopolitical boundaries shape inter-religious relations in the area and examine the factors that promote or hinder religious harmony.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the effect of geopolitical boundaries on inter-religious relations in Tafawa Balewa LGA.
  2. To assess the role of local political and religious leadership in fostering inter-religious harmony.
  3. To propose strategies for improving inter-religious relations in Tafawa Balewa LGA through better management of geopolitical boundaries.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do geopolitical boundaries affect inter-religious relations in Tafawa Balewa LGA?
  2. What role do political and religious leaders play in promoting inter-religious harmony in Tafawa Balewa LGA?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to improve inter-religious relations in Tafawa Balewa LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical boundaries significantly affect inter-religious harmony in Tafawa Balewa LGA.
  2. Political and religious leaders have a significant influence on the promotion of inter-religious harmony in Tafawa Balewa LGA.
  3. Inter-religious harmony can be improved through better management of geopolitical boundaries in Tafawa Balewa LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it sheds light on the role of geopolitical boundaries in shaping inter-religious harmony, particularly in regions where religious tensions are prevalent. By focusing on Tafawa Balewa LGA, the study will provide a deeper understanding of how political and religious leaders can leverage boundaries to promote peace. The findings will be useful for policymakers, local leaders, and religious communities in formulating strategies to enhance social cohesion and reduce religious conflicts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Tafawa Balewa LGA in Bauchi State, specifically examining the impact of geopolitical boundaries on inter-religious relations. The limitations of this study include possible difficulties in accessing reliable data due to political sensitivities and the complexity of inter-religious conflicts in the region.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Boundaries: Political borders or divisions that separate different ethnic, religious, or political groups within a region.
  • Inter-Religious Harmony: A peaceful coexistence between different religious groups, characterized by mutual respect and understanding.
  • Local Government Area (LGA): A unit of local administration in Nigeria, responsible for governance and public service delivery at the grassroots level.
